A March Visit to the New York Botanical Garden

PRINT AS PDF

The New York Botanical Garden is less than a 10-minute’s drive away from the Lehman College campus. Once there, one has left the Bronx’s urban settings and entered one of New York City’s jewels of nature. This year, the Garden is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Its annual orchid show is already underway.

As the days grow warmer—and one can already feel the mild winds of a rising spring sweeping across the landscape—the crowds will grow as another unforgettable show of flowers and blossoms of all varieties commences and spreads throughout the Garden. But it will be a few more weeks before the spring gains full control of the Garden’s landscape, even if the mercury reaches or exceeds 70° later this week.

Nevertheless, winter’s retreat provides beauty, as well. Such beauty is often overlooked. At the intersection of departing winter and arriving spring, snow and flowers coexist seemingly in a mutual seasonal peace pact.

Five photos from that transitional period are below.
