Near Record Warm January Brings Blossoms

PRINT AS PDF

January 2023 is nearing a conclusion. It will very likely rank as the second warmest January on record in New York City where records go back to 1869. Though yesterday, New York City had seen a record 33 consecutive days with above normal temperatures (the old record was 31 consecutive days). New York City has yet to see any measurable snowfall. No winter has gone later without a measurable snowfall. The lowest temperature so far has been 28°. No previous January had seen a monthly minimum temperature above 25°.

On account of the exceptional warmth, flowers have appeared at the New York Botanical Garden and elsewhere in the New York City Metro Area. Those flowers could be endangered by a brief but very sharp shot of cold that is likely late this week.
