On Saturday, January 6, 2024, New York City picked up 0.2” of snow. That was the first measurable snowfall of the 2023-2024 season. That was tied with Winter 1891-1892 for the 13th latest first measurable snowfall on record. Last winter established a new record with the first measurable snowfall occurring on February 1, 2023 en route to the lowest seasonal and calendar year snowfall on record (2.3”).

Since Winter 1869-1870, there have been 17 winters where the first measurable snowfall occurred on January 1 or later. A disproportionate 5 of those winters occurred since Winter 2000-2001. The current normal date for the first measurable snowfall is December 13.

With New York City seeing less than 1” of daily snowfall, its ongoing streak without 1” or more daily snowfall will extend to a record 694 consecutive days today. That demolishes the old record of 383 days that had been set during the period March 4, 1997 through March 21, 1998.

The storm responsible for New York City’s first measurable snowfall of the season produced much heavier snowfall well north and west of New York City. Goshen (1 N), NY saw 11.8”. Middletown, NY was blanketed by 13.2”. Port Jervis, NY received 13.1”
