The “False Spring” of December 2021 Goes On

The calendar has now moved past mid-December. A growing share of the public has turned to the joy of Hanukkah and coming joy of Christmas, all the while keeping a wary eye on the escalating spread of the unwelcome Omicron variant of COVID-19.

To date, New York City has yet to experience a measurable snowfall. There, the snowfall is somewhat later than normal, at least for now. Chicago is now arriving at and will be moving beyond its record for the latest first measurable snowfall on record.

So, what’s in bloom at the New York Botanical Garden? In a “normal” winter—“normal” winters don’t seem to happen very often anymore in the New York City area—almost nothing should be in bloom outdoors. Yet, even as virtually all of the leaves have come down, quite a bit is in bloom.
