The data is now in. As had been implied by rolling bouts of record warmth, near absence of severe cold, and abnormally low snowfall in much of the United States, the United States experienced its warmest winter on record. Winter 2023-2024 smashed the record that had been set in 2015-2016 by 0.82°F. Separately, Canada also saw its warmest winter on record, by far.

Winters have continued to warm on account of climate change. In addition, it is possible that the New York City area is now in the early stages of a long-term decline in seasonal snowfall. Through March 10, New York City has seen just 7.5” of snow and remains on a possible course toward experiencing a record second consecutive snow season with less than 10” snowfall.
