Frigid area has gripped the New York City area for nine consecutive days during which the high temperature has remained below freezing. The nine-day mean temperature of 16.9°F (-8.4°C) is the coldest since December 30, 2017-January 7, 2018 when the average temperature was 16.6°F (-8.6°C). Before 2017-2018, one has to go back to January 15-23, 1994 to find a comparable or colder nine-day stretch.
As a result, the waterways have begun to ice up. The icing is most pronounced further up the Hudson River.
