Building a Framework for Effective AES Assessment

On Friday, May 11, 2018, the CUNY MSCHE Workshop Series featured Dr. Christopher Shults, Dean of Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Planning at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). Dr. Shults introduced workshop attendees to BMCC’s AES assessment framework. He also took attendees through an exercise in developing unit goals and outcomes for a hypothetical comprehensive college.

Among other things, the workshop covered:

  • The importance of institutional effectiveness
  • The elements of institutional effectiveness
  • Institutional missions and goals
  • Unit missions and goals
  • Student learning outcomes and support outcomes for AES units
  • A taxonomy for AES units modeled after Bloom’s Taxonomy for academic units
  • Designing AES assessment for a systematic approach
