Abnormal Warmth Brings Springlike Appearance to the New York Botanical Garden

PRINT AS PDF

From January 1-March 18, the temperature in New York City has averaged 42.4°. That is the warmest start to the year since recordkeeping began in 1869. Four of the five warmest starts to the year have occurred since 2000 and all have occurred since 1990.

In response to the sustained warmth, one witnessed the first appearance of crocuses, Japanese apricot blossoms, paperbush, and narcissuses during February. Now, shortly after mid-March, the flowering cherry trees, azaleas, and even some magnolia’s have burst into bloom.
