Yesterday, New York City reached its unprecedented 700th consecutive day without at least an inch of daily snowfall. That exceeds the old record by more than 300 days. While the ongoing record will likely stand for some time to come once the streak ends—which could occur as early as tomorrow—it could portend future long-duration periods with little snowfall from a warming climate. Indeed, New York City’s average seasonal snowfall of approximately 29” could slip toward 20” by the middle of the next decade based on outcomes from Mid-Atlantic cities that have already reached winter temperatures forecast on the climate models by the middle 2030s for New York City.
