The New York Botanical Garden’s annual orchid show came to a sudden and premature end as the spread of the COVID-19 virus led to the Garden’s closing its facilities and then its grounds. Some of the orchids from that show are below. They provide a reminder that even in the darkest of seasons, beauty can be found—in nature and in the generosity of people.

During the opening of the orchid show, crowds were somewhat smaller than had usually been the case. In part, the show was schedule to run for longer than in the past. In part, news stories concerning the COVID-19 outbreak were becoming more common.
